The highly anticipated fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, known as Skyblivion, is approaching completion after over a decade of development. This ambitious project, led by the TESRenewal modding group, aims to recreate the 2006 classic within the more advanced Skyrim engine, offering enhanced graphics and gameplay improvements.
As of early 2025, the Skyblivion team has made significant progress, with only the Nibenay region on Cyrodiil’s eastern border left to finalize. Eight out of nine regions have been fully landscaped, and cities like Anvil have been re-envisioned to align with their original concept art. Interiors, including sewers and watchtowers, are largely complete, and the majority of 3D objects, such as trees, enemies, and armor, have been recreated. Notably, over 2,500 objects have been remade to date.
In terms of quests, the project has seen remarkable advancement. Whereas a year ago, over 100 quests had yet to be started, only six now remain untouched. This includes progress on major questlines and guilds, bringing the remake closer to a comprehensive release. Additionally, all original music from Oblivion has been integrated, complemented by new compositions to enrich the gaming experience.
Despite these achievements, the Skyblivion team continues to seek volunteer support to expedite the project’s completion. There is a particular need for 3D artists with an interest in botany to assist in recreating Oblivion’s diverse plant life. Prospective volunteers can apply through the official Skyblivion website.
While the primary focus remains on the base game, the team has expressed intentions to address Oblivion’s downloadable content (DLC) post-release. This strategy aims to ensure that the main game is delivered to fans within the projected 2025 timeline, with additional content to follow thereafter.
Skyblivion represents a monumental effort within the gaming community, reflecting a deep-seated passion for The Elder Scrolls series. As the project nears its long-awaited release, it stands as a testament to the dedication and skill of its volunteer developers, promising to deliver a revitalized journey through the lands of Cyrodiil for both new players and long-time fans.
