Sony has officially announced an anime adaptation of its acclaimed video game, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027.
The series will be a collaborative effort between Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions. Takanobu Mizuno, known for his work on Star Wars: Visions and Batman Ninja, will direct the anime, with story composition by Gen Urobuchi (Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass). Animation will be handled by studio Kamikaze Douga.
Unlike the main game’s narrative, which follows samurai Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima, the anime will draw inspiration from the game’s cooperative multiplayer mode, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. This mode delves into Japanese mythology and folklore, allowing players to embody various classes such as Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin. The anime aims to explore these mythic tales, offering fans a fresh perspective on the game’s rich universe.
Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating that the anime will provide “an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking.” Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, added that the game’s immersive world and Legends mode offer the perfect foundation for this adaptation.
This announcement comes amid a broader trend of adapting popular video games into animated and live-action formats. In addition to the Ghost of Tsushima anime, a live-action film directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick) is currently in development. Furthermore, Sucker Punch Productions is working on a sequel to the original game, titled Ghost of Yotei, scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
Fans of the franchise can look forward to the anime’s release in 2027, which promises to expand the Ghost of Tsushima universe by delving deeper into the legends and myths that inspired the original game’s multiplayer mode.
