Sony Interactive Entertainment is expanding its portfolio of video game adaptations with the announcement of live-action films based on “Horizon Zero Dawn” and “Helldivers 2.” The news was revealed by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference in Las Vegas.
“Horizon Zero Dawn,” developed by Guerrilla Games, is set in a post-apocalyptic world where protagonist Aloy navigates a landscape dominated by mechanical creatures. The film adaptation is in early development with Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, aiming to bring Aloy’s rich narrative to the big screen.
“Helldivers 2,” a cooperative third-person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, involves players acting as elite soldiers combating alien threats to humanity. The game has been a commercial success, selling over 12 million copies within three months of its release in February 2024.The film adaptation is being developed by Sony Pictures, with the project currently in its early stages.
These announcements are part of Sony’s broader strategy to adapt its popular gaming franchises into films and television series. PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, has previously released adaptations such as “Uncharted” and “Gran Turismo,” and is working on projects including “God of War,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” and “Gravity Rush.”
Additionally, during the CES 2025 keynote, Crunchyroll and Aniplex announced plans for an anime series based on “Ghost of Tsushima,” further expanding Sony’s efforts to bring its gaming properties to diverse media formats.
While specific details, including casting and release dates for the “Horizon Zero Dawn” and “Helldivers 2” films, have not been disclosed, these projects underscore Sony’s commitment to leveraging its gaming IPs for cinematic storytelling.
