Sony has officially announced that the upcoming film adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation horror game Until Dawn will feature an entirely new storyline and a fresh ensemble of characters, distinct from those in the original game. This revelation was made during Sony’s presentation at CES 2025, where Ashley Brucks, president of Sony’s film division Screen Gems, emphasized the film’s commitment to honoring the essence of the game while introducing novel elements to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers.
Actor Peter Stormare, known for his role as Dr. Alan J. Hill in the original game, is set to reprise his character in the film. He expressed enthusiasm for the project’s direction, stating, “The movie is going to be full of fresh characters and victims in a brand new story loaded with twists, so whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, get ready for Until Dawn like you’ve never seen it before.”
Directed by David F. Sandberg, renowned for his work on horror films such as Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, the film is slated for release on April 25, 2025. The cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, and Belmont Cameli, with Stormare being the sole returning actor from the game.
The decision to craft an original narrative within the Until Dawn universe allows the filmmakers to expand the series’ mythology without being confined to the game’s plot. This approach aims to deliver a fresh and suspenseful experience that pays homage to the game’s roots while exploring new horror elements.
As the release date approaches, fans eagerly anticipate how this new chapter will unfold and how it will contribute to the broader Until Dawn universe. The film’s unique storyline and characters are poised to offer a thrilling experience that stands on its own, appealing to both dedicated fans of the game and those new to the franchise.
